Traveling through the country’s most popular tourist circuit, the Golden Triangle – Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur – is set to become hassle-free soon.
From December 1, commercial tourist vehicles will be able to pass through Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan without having to stop at checkpoints to pay road tax.
Under the pilot project, the three states will enter into agreements so that travel operators and transporters can get their vehicles registered in the capital. The Delhi transport department will be the nodal agency for registration and collection of taxes.
After they pay the tax, which can be done monthly or quarterly, the vehicle operators will be issued a registration certificate and a sticker that will allow them a smooth travel across these states.
The travel and tour industry has been asking the government to change the road tax system into a single – window process. The decision to issue zonal permit for the Golden Triangle will help cut travel time by over an hour, sources say.
The division of tax among the three states will be decided on the basis of the kilometers covered in each state. The share of all the states will be deposited in their designated bank accounts so that there is no delay in receipt of the tax amount.
Tourism secretary Sujit Banerjee said the ministry will check the efficiency of the system till April next year before introducing it in other tourist circuits.
