German Airlines Company, Lufthansa, says there is a 15 per cent increase in demand for economy seats in India as a result of the economic slowdown.
“We have adjusted our existing capacity to meet the growing market demand for economy seats by reducing the number of business class seats. In our Boeing 747’s for instance. We have reduced the business class seats from 80 to 66 and increased the economy seats from 234 to 270 to cope with the demand “said Mr. Axel Hilgers, director South-Asia, Lufthansa German Airlines.
Even though the economic slowdown has brought down Lufthansa’s passenger volumes on an average by 10 per cent and yield per passengers by 20 per cent this year, it will continue to fly all 54 flights to 7 Indian cities.
“While many airline companies have pulled out of Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai, we will continue our frequencies to the seven cities,” said Mr.Hilgers.
The airline has taken a beating in Mumbai and Bengaluru sectors due to a change in the travel policies of the corporate sector.” Majority of our corporate customers in Bengaluru are from the IT sector, which has reduced international travel drastically” said Mr. Hilgers.
