Tourism ministry has warned states that it will stop funding Infrastructure projects in case works do not start within a year due to non-availability of land.
The ministry has an annual budget of Rs 522 crore for tourism infrastructure.
“If a project sanctioned by the ministry is not started due to any availability of land even after a year, the project will be dropped and the funds will be recovered or adjusted,” tourism secretary Sujit Banerjee has said in a letter to chief secretaries of states and Union territories.
The ministry has asked states that the detailed project report of a project must also make clear that land is available with the implementing agency.
In a review, the ministry found that various projects undertaken by state governments are lagging behind for want of land. It has asked states to encourage public-private partnership model for maintaining and operating infrastructure.
The tourism secretary has also asked states to upgrade and strengthen tourist facilities as a part of the tourism policy from their own resources.” States should create all-weather networks and connectivity in and around tourist destinations,” he said.
To provide seamless connectivity to tourist vehicles the ministry plans to start a pilot project that would allow tourist vehicles to move from one state to another without stopping at borders to pay tax. The tax would be paid by tour operators at a central office in Delhi which would later be transferred to the states concerned.
