Come October, your stay at star or budget category hotels would be become further costly affair as one-third of hotels have decided to hike their room tariffs.
“About 25 to 30 per cent of the total registered hotels in the country have decided to hike their room tariffs from October 1 onwards,” says Mr Deepak Sharma, the secretary-general of Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Association of India (FHRAI), an organisation representing all registered hotels in the country.
He said that about 40 to 45 per cent of hotels will retain the current tariffs for the time being and increase later this year, when the economy gets back on the track.
The hotel industry generally revises its tariffs in October every year. However, the reluctance of the majority of hoteliers to cut tariffs comes as a surprise, especially in the backdrop of the economic slowdown.
ITDC Hotel Ashoka and Radisson Marina are planning to hike their room tariffs from October 1.
However, others prefer to wait till the year end.
East Indian Hotels (EIH), the flagship company of the Oberoi group, will wait till the year-end, said Ms Ketaki Narain, corporate communication head, EIH.
Mr Deepak Manocha, the general manager of Courtyard, Marriott, Hinjewadi, Pune, said, “After the global meltdown, we are not looking forward to change our room tariffs till the year end. Business has slowed down, thanks to the recession coupled with the swine flu scare.”
According to sources in Hyderabad Fortune Select Manohar, the hotel will maintain their current room tariffs till December 31.
