The resurgence of domestic airlines seems to be continuing.
The nine domestic airlines flew 40,000 more passengers in August compared to the previous month, the latest data provided by the Directorate-General Civil Aviation show.
The August figures show a 26 per cent increase over the same month last year when only 2.92 million passengers were carried by domestic airlines.
The total number of passengers carried by domestic airlines was 3.63 million compared to 3.59 million in July.
Low-cost airlines
During August, the low-cost airlines seem to have been the top choice. The combined passenger carriage of the three low-cost airlines – Spice Jet, IndiGo and Go Air – increased by 5.34 lakh. The combined market share also increased from 21.5 per cent last August to 31.9 per cent this year.
On a standalone basis, IndiGo recorded the highest passenger increase to 5.05 lakh (2.98 lakh). Spice Jet’s market share rose 3.8 per cent to 12.3 per cent (8.5 per cent).
IndiGo Airlines and Go Air too recorded an increase of 3.6 per cent and 3 per cent in their market share.
Kingfisher top performer
Among the full service airlines Kingfisher was the top performer, flying 8.20 lakh passengers. Kingfisher however no longer gives a break up between the passengers carried by its full service airline and its low cost arm, Kingfisher Red.
Jet Airways’ passenger carriage stood at 6.78 lakh (7 lakh), a decline of about 22,000 passengers.
Also, 6.04 lakh passengers flew on the state-owned Air India Domestic. This is an increase of 22,000 over July and 84,000 compared with August 2008.
