The U.S. Ambassador to India, Timothy J. Roemer, inaugurated a consular section at the American Embassy here on Monday to provide faster and better consular service to Indian nationals applying for U.S. visas.
“This facility is a reflection of the enduring strength of the U.S.-India relationship and demonstrates the U.S. commitment to our expanding people-to-people ties just as we are strengthening our strategic partnership for the prosperity, security and democratic future of all our citizens,” said Mr. Roemer.
The new facility doubles the waiting area for visa-seekers, triples the customer seating, adds a modern queuing system to guide customers through the visa process and includes many new interviewing windows.
However, Minister Counsellor for Consular Affairs James Herman clarified that the new section at the embassy would only facilitate the process and it did not imply that more visas would be issued.
“We want to make sure that the visa applications are processed faster. Reflecting the US Embassy’s commitment to providing enhanced services in every part of India, a brand new consulate was recently opened in Hyderabad,” he said
“We have also upgraded our facilities in Chennai and Kolkata, and an entirely new consular facility is in advanced stage of construction in Mumbai and should be ready by May next year,” Mr. Herman added.
