Only one –fifth of the total hotel rooms are expected to be ready before the Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi in October 2010.
According to tourism ministry estimates, her is a requirements of 30,000 additional rooms in the national capital region to accommodate the 1 lakh tourists , which are expected for the Games .However, only 5,700 hotel rooms are expected to be ready in NCR region as the global economic crisis has forced many developers to put their projects on hold.
According to a report by hospitality consultant form HVS India, around 100 hotel projects with a room supply of around 22,360 were indifference phases of development last year.
However, the number of hotels in the pipeline has come down to 60 currently.Manv Thadani, managing director , HVS India said only 53% of 60 hotels will be operational in the next five years, which will make around 8,780 rooms available .Moreover, even a smaller number -5,700 rooms will be ready before the Games.Amongsome of the biggest projects that have been put on hold is the convention centre in Dwarka by DLF.The Noida Authority has also promised to build 10 hotels before the Games, which will not be built now.
Moreover, the Delhi International Airport Private Ltd , a consortium led by the GMR Group, which operates , manages and is developing the Indira Gandhi International airport at New Delhi has awarded the development rights of six properties in the hospitality district of the airport.
The project, which has a total capacity of 2,000 rooms and a mix of 5-star , 4-star and 3-star hotels is expected to see only one hotel coming up before the Games.Thadani said in the last 12-18 months, around 1,000 to 1,500 new rooms have come up in the NCR with opening of new hotels like Leela Kimpinski in Gurgaon.The existing supply in the region is around 8,625 rooms .According to a latest release by the tourism ministry, around 11,000 rooms will be made available form approved guest houses along with 3,000 rooms from bed and breakfast and home stay schemes 5,500 DDA flats are also being readied for the purpose. The report also predicts a rate correction with new supply of hotels coming up in the country.
