The number of foreign tourists visiting India dropped by 4.1% at 3.17 lakh in September 2009 due to the global economic downturn and the fear of Swine flu, a tourism ministry official said.
But the falling number has no impact on country’s foreign exchange earnings (FEEs) from tourism. It jumped about 21% at Rs 3.798 crore in the September as compared to the same month last year.
Tourism secretary Sujit Banerjee said tourist traffic will increase from October as peak season starts then.” A combination of factors, including the panic of H1Ni, economic slowdown and lean season, affected foreign tourist inflow last month,”Mr Banerjee told ET.
The number of foreign visitors has been declining since August this year after a marginal increase in June this year. The fall in traffic could not be stopped despite the government launched slew of initiatives to woo foreign tourists. It has declared the current year as ‘Visit India Year’ and is offering several promotional packages such as companion-free air passage to win back tourists.
