Enthused by its success in the Delhi-Beijing flights, state-owned Air China is studying the feasibility of starting another route from Chengdu to an Indian metropolitan city with Kolkata, Banglore and Mumbai making it to the final list, a top official said on Monday.
The team for Air China Route Planning Department is visiting Kolkata to ascertain route feasibility for the operations in the near future. The final decision is awaited.Chengdu is the fourth largest hub in China. Expanding in India makes sense as this country is a key market for us, said Zhao Quanzhen, country manager (India) of Air China.
If approvals come quickly, the new route will be made operational from next year, he added. Air China has appointed Bird Group as their GSA for northern and eastern India. The company, which reported $7.3 billion revenue last year, has an equal contribution from domestic and global operations.
The plans are to start two or three flights per week and consequently increase the number as per demand. We started with Delhi-Beijing with three non-stop flights per week and would be increasing the frequency to four per week in the winter schedule, Zhao said.
The company is studying the feasibility of starting flights for the Shanghai- Mumbai route.
