Stressing on its core job of promoting tourism, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism has decided to gradually bring in the private sector to set up new hotels in various locations.
“Our core job is to promote tourism and not to run hotels only. The State Government does not want the Madhya Pradesh Tourism to add on new hotels. We will only set up hotels in new destinations where private players will not come easily. It will be a ki nd of balanced approach,” Mr H.R. Rao, Managing Director of Madhya Pradesh Tourism, told PTI here.
He said that 7-8 properties have been put on the block including one in Khajuraho. “But we will certainly not hive off all our properties. We had earned a revenue of Rs 60 crore during 2009-10 and posted a net profit of Rs 3 crore. We have set a sales ta rget of Rs 85 crore this fiscal,” he said.
Apart from running hotels, the Government wants private players to promote water tourism on the River Narmada, water sports etc. Archaeological heritage is another area where MPT would lay more stress, he said.
It is also considering a proposal for opening wayside amenities on the National Highways as well as State Highways through public-private partnership model.
“In the first phase we plan to set up wayside amenities in every 50 km. Each of such facility would cost about Rs 40 lakh,” he said. — PTI
