The government on Thursday said there is a shortage of personnel in the Airports Authority of India's communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS) department.
"The sanctioned strength of CNS discipline in AAI is 3,249 and against this, 1,849 personnel are in position," Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
However, he said that suitable measures like deployment of personnel for permissible extra duties have been taken to meet the shortfall in manpower for day-to-day functioning.
The minister said between 2007 and 2010, AAI had filled 1,391 vacant posts through direct recruitment and departmental promotion.
Patel said that a recruitment drive was on to fill 610 vacancies at the manager, junior executive and non-executive levels.
In another reply, the minister said that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has installed automatic Aviation Weather Observing System (AWOS) at eight airports in the country and it is planned to cover 42 more airports with these systems.
He said that the funds to be invested on setting up of these systems is approximately Rs 50 crore.
