Major European airlines say passenger traffic dropped 13.1 percent in April, compared with a year ago, as they were forced to ground flights due to ash in the air from a volcano eruption in Iceland.
Figures from the Association of European Airlines published Wednesday show most of the region's 36 members lost money during the month on top of slow business from the troubled economy.
British airlines were the among the worst affected as they were unable to fly lucrative trans-Atlantic routes. British Airways' passenger numbers were down 22.3 percent from the same month in 2009. Virgin Airways was down 21.2 percent.
