The Union Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned various projects in the North Eastern States in the past three years, including 48 for Nagaland worth Rs. 72.65 crores. Interestingly as funds for development perk up for the state, a mere 1423 foreign tourists visited Nagaland compared to the large 3,17,541 domestic tourists who visited in the past three years
The projects sanctioned are Sikkim with 72 projects at a cost of Rs 162.15 crores, Nagaland with 48 projects at a cost of Rs. 72.65 crores, Arunachal Pradesh with 41 projects at a cost of Rs. 111.21 crores, Tripura with 32 projects at a cost of Rs. 35.93 crores, Manipur with 25 projects at a cost of Rs. 73.44 crores, Mizoram with 18 projects at a cost of Rs. 44.53 crores, Assam and Meghalaya 15 projects each at a cost of Rs. 44.55 crores and Rs. 33.86 crores respectively.
Implementation of the projects sanctioned is the responsibility of the concerned State governments. The Ministry reviews the progress made in regard to implementation from time to time.
Meanwhile, according to a Ministry of Tourism report, a large number of both foreign and domestic tourists visited the North Eastern states during the last three years. These include 1,95,147 domestic and 3945 foreign tourists in Arunachal Pradesh, 5,91,398 domestic and 4522 foreign tourists in Meghalaya, 5,47,810 domestic and 17,730 foreign tourists in Sikkim, 56,651 domestic and 513 foreign tourists in Mizoram, 38,50,521 domestic and 14,942 foreign tourists in Assam, 1,24,229 domestic and 337 foreign tourists in Manipur, 20,953 domestic and 1423 foreign tourists in Nagaland and 3,17,541 domestic and 4246 foreign tourists in Tripura during the year 2009.
