Gujarat’s skies will become one of the busiest in the country in the next couple of months with at least two airlines starting operations to connect various cities of the state. Eight flights daily will connect Bhuj, Rajkot and Jamnagar to Ahmedabad and Surat, making it the only state in the country with such connectivity.

SpiceJet has declared a net annual profit of Rs 61.4 crore for the fiscal year 2009-10 against a loss of Rs 352.5 crore during the previous fiscal year. For the Jan-Mar quarter, the profit was Rs 27.5 crore against a loss of Rs 7.8 crore for the same period last year. In FY 2009-10, it saw a 44 per cent increase in traffic whereas the total air traffic increased only by 16 per cent.

When the Bajpe airport at Mangalore was built in 1951, it was designed to handle small aircraft like the Dakota that carried 21-28 people. By the 1980s, larger aircraft entered operation and Avros with over 40 seats started landing at the table-top airport. Over the decades, the airport was upgraded to handle even larger aircraft.

Though international flights started operating from Sanganer Airport a decade-and-a-half years ago, the airport is still running on provisional licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for not complying with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) norms and regulations. The prime concern is that Sanganer Airport is surrounded by residential colonies.
